History

The Russian Relief Association has supported the Russian Community and older persons for over 70 years. From humble beginnings and with the commitment of Boards and members, St Sergius Aged Care is now one of the most reliable and trusted providers of quality residential and community aged care services in the Sydney region providing services to over 200 residents and clients.

1945 The Russian Relief Organisation was formed as a charitable organisation to assist Russians with food and clothing after the Second World War. The first Russian Relief Organisation Committee was elected.
1955 Acquisition of funds to buy a house on a large block in Cabramatta. The Home for the Aged was established.
1957 In 1977, the Russian Relief Organisation Committee is reorganised at the Russian Relief Association of St Sergius of Radonezh in Sydney. It is registered and its statues approved. The Board start to work on plans for a new home for the aged.
1959 Construction is completed and the Home is blessed. 20 residents begin living at their new home.
1963 Additional land in purchased with a vision to expand relief work.
1965 - 1970 15 Independent living units are constructed and officially opened and then expanded by another 22 units in 1967. The Home for the Aged is expanded by 29 places.
1973 Construction of The Hospital for the Chronically Ill is completed and in 1974 accepts its first patient.
1984 The organisation begins to receive Government support which improves the financial situation.
1988 A home is constructed for persons with dementia. A laundry, car park and walkways are constructed.
1998-2004 The Home for the Chronically Ill is expanded by an additional 7 wards, a hydrotherapy facility was built and other auxiliary units are added.
2005 A new Management structure is commenced to oversight the running of services.
2007 St Sergius celebrates its 50th anniversary.
2008 A new building was constructed to include all services for older people under one roof.
2013 20 bed licences and HACC funding for home care is received.
2014 A second new building with car parking and additional flats is developed.
2015 Commonwealth home support program services commence.
2019 Home care services commence.
2021 Approval of eight additional aged care bed licences.
2022 Approval to operate five Transitional Aged Care Program services (short term care that aims to optimise the functioning and independence of older people after a hospital stay).
2022 Commenced development of eight single aged care suites.

Over a period of more than 50 years, the Association’s members, Board of Directors and staff have built upon this small beginning to create a large and modern aged-care complex. Equipped with the latest technology and equipment, the facility provides aging in place care on a 24/7 principle to 168 high and low care Consumers, as well as offering an independent village for 26 self-care units and apartments and Commonwealth Home Support Programme (Social Support group a centre based Day Respite). Highly qualified management and staff provide care for our whole community of Consumers and undergo continuing education to keep in step with new legislation, new aged-care quality standards and requirements.
